Herzog

The Haardter Herzog covers 35 hectares of soil rich in stones. At the edge of the mountains, the red sandstone has eroded and deposited on the hillsides. The site is located in a south-eastern direction. In our vineyards, we only grow Riesling on this barren soil, which contains  many pebbles and fragments of sandstone.

The red sandstone has developed when the Rhine deposited its sediments here. The high proportion of pebbles also comes from this time. The nutrient-poor sandstone forces young vines to go deep into the ground early in order to obtain nutrients and water.

The yield is reduced by hand every year after flowering in order to have the the vines focus on less crop and to obtain expressive wines. At an altitude of 157-200 meters above sea level, our two vineyards produce crystal clear, fresh Rieslings with a distinctive acidity and citrus and grapefruit aromas.
